I originally started attending fitness classes, dance classes and health clubs since 1980. During this era, some of the classes I attended were rather dodgy but I enjoyed this growing phenomenon of group activity, especially the music. By coincidence, the job I had at the time was with Nike in their PR department and from that experience, I knew that the future of the fitness market was about to explode. I was an enchanted member of Danceworks in the west end of London and one of the teachers there said to me” You should teach”, so in 1984 I did start to teach and by 1985 I was pleased to be holding a Certificate with Distinction from the PEA (Physical Education Association).
I started teaching ‘aerobics’ as was the trend in the mid 80s but throughout the years, I took qualifications in virtually every fitness discipline that existed, including, step, Body Pump, aqua aerobics, weight training, gym instruction, functional fitness, Pilates, indoor cycling, rehab, personal training, athletic conditioning, and I also hold UK Athletics coaching qualifications. I have completed 8 marathons and 37 half marathons.
Needless to say, I took a keen interest in nutrition as it was a natural companion to my passion for activity. I will admit (with regret) that I also attempted to lose weight by doing the most ridiculous and the most extreme diets possible. Fortunately, 40 years on, there is a lot more valuable information around the world of optimum health and nutrition
My passion has now taken on a new direction of keeping older women well instead of ill. The UK has an appalling record of preventable illnesses due to a lack of adequate healthy lifestyles and exercise.
I want to continue working with older women and encourage more people to engage in living well, reduce the dependence on drugs and medicine and get people out and about and move their bodies. I love the never-ending range of compliments I get from people who refuse to believe that I am 70. I hope that my energy and ‘joie-de-vivre’ is contagious and will encourage you to live life to the full – which can only be achieved if you are fit.
What I can do is to help you to improve your wellbeing. I will not prescribe you a calorie controlled restrictive diet as both you and I know you will end up feeling hungry, miserable and craving for things ‘NOT ALLOWED’. I will also not force you to train for the next marathon (even though I have completed eight myself). Instead, I can help you to feel energised, happy about yourself and your future and I will help to empower you, which will eliminate feelings of guilt and powerlessness. It is not only your exercise and food intake that needs a helping hand, but your lifestyle. If you are willing to view things differently and go for a change, inevitably you will change and have great success.
